The Busy Life Of A Caregiver

We all get bored sometimes, but imagine the challenges of a family member who requires a caregiver. Often they spend weeks at a time cooped up in their homes, only leaving to go for Doctor’s appointments. When you are the one providing the caregiving, don’t forget to consider the importance of entertainment.

First let us get rid of one idea. Television might be entertaining, but after weeks, it is no longer entertainment. You need to provide an opportunity for more mental and physical entertainment than just plopping them in front of the television set.

What are some of the options? You need to evaluate their mobility first. It they can get out and around, then heading out for a ride to a park and taking a short walk can be great. Going to the mall, or a store and just wandering around when you haven’t done it in months is very entertaining.

If they cannot walk, but can still ride in a car, drive through the park. Surprise them with a visit to a drive-thru ice cream parlor. Take a drive around a lake or through the countryside.

For homebound patients, find card games, board games, and other items to spur their imaginations and fingers. Caregiving is about exploring options and discovering what makes them happy, and puts a smile on their faces. When they smile, you’ll smile in satisfaction, also.

While we said television isn’t entertainment, finding some of their favorite old movies, popping up a batch of fresh popcorn, and inviting some of their friends over to watch with them is great entertainment. Maybe they don’t like old movies, but would prefer the latest action flick. You’ll never know without asking.

Even if you have taken over the role as the main cook, it might be time to call upon some assistance. If your family member, or patient can help with peeling, chopping, or other preparation items they will not only feel entertained, they will feel useful. Asking for assistance with cutting cookies, decorating cookies, or other baked items is also a great form of entertainment.

One of the biggest secret weapons to pull out for a really bored home bound patient is children. If your family has little kids who can come over, play, laugh, and make noise, you can be assured you are going to see smiles of joy. Nothing kills boredom as quickly as the excitement of children.

When you start feeling stuck for ideas, grab out some books for other recommendations. You will be amazed at all the options there are for entertainment for any age. Don’t be afraid to turn to the phone and start calling their friends for suggestions. They know all of the things they enjoyed in the past, and probably would still enjoy being involved in. Imagine the delight of an old golfer to go ride a golf cart around the range with his old golfing buddies, even if he can’t play. Getting back outside and enjoying the day could be the best day of his year.

Caregiving is not only about caring for the body, but also caring for the spirit. Don’t forget to include entertainment in your plans.
